First installation of equipment within the Farcross programme

Installation of the equipment was done within the Work Package 5 “Pilot Deployment, Demonstration and Evaluation – DLR-H DEMO: Complex grid management technology for handling cross-border transmission line capacity-related issue”.

In June 2020, the team of the Croatian TSO (HOPS) successfully installed sensors on an internal transmission line in Croatia with the cooperation of teams: BME, C&G, ROTECH, UM, and LINEVISION. This is one of four planned installations in different countries (Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Greece) in which sensors will be installed in highly congested and cross-border transmission lines as a part of the solution provided by FARCROSS demonstration. During the installation process the transmission line was disconnected and all safety rules were followed.

Installation Schedule – 1st year:

  • HOPS – internal transmission line Senj – Melina (CR), June 2020
  • MAVIR – cross-border transmission line God – Levice (HU-SK), July 2020
  • APG – internal transmission line Ernsthofen – Wallsee (AT), August 2020
  • IPTO – cross-border transmission line Solun – Blagoevgrad (GR-BU), September 2020

The purpose of this demonstration is to show how system operators use the dynamic line rating system (DLR) in determination of transmission lines’ loading and the sensor technology for efficient managing of the transmission system which enables cross-border flexibility due to increased integration of renewable energy generation. As the DLR method is providing real time monitoring of transmission lines, existing transmission lines can be maximally and safely used in an economic manner.

Therefore, with this installation FARCROSS gets closer to achieving its goals related to the improvement of cross-border flows and trade, and better use of the infrastructure by increasing flexibility of loading limits by 50%.
